CCECE 2013 

1. Info on CCECE

The 2013 Canadian Conference on Electrical and Computer Engineering was held in Regina, Saskatchewan from May 5th to 8th, 2013 at the Delta Hotel and the University of Regina. CCECE 2013 provided a forum for electrical and computer engineering research and development from Canada and around the world.



2. Background on Dr. Trevor Hall

Trevor J. Hall is a Canada Research Chair Tier I in Photonic Network Technology; a Professor; and the Director of the Centre for Research in Photonics at the University of Ottawa. His undergraduate studies in General Engineering were spent at Christ’s College, Cambridge, UK, where he was awarded a BA and a MA; and his graduate studies in Electronic Engineering were spent at the University College London, UK, where he was awarded a PhD in 1980.After a period with Cambridge Consultants Ltd., he commenced an academic career as a Lecturer and, subsequently, a Reader in the Physics Department at Queen Elizabeth College London, UK (now King’s College London, UK). He transferred from the Physics Department to the Physics Department to Electronic Engineering Department in 1993 and was promoted to Professor of Optoelectronics.

In 2002, he transferred to his present position in Canada. He has pioneered systems implementations of photonic device technologies; he has published ~400 scientific papers; and he has initiated 8 patents. He co-founded OneChip Photonics Inc. which now has 50 employees. He was appointed to the SISCom International Chair 2010/11 hosted by Telecom Bretagne France and supported by the Université Européenne de Bretagne. He was also honoured as a Distinguished Scholar of the Erasmus Mundus Master in Photonics co-ordinated by Ghent University. He is a Chartered Scientist (C.Sci), Chartered Physicist (C.Phys), and Chartered Engineer (C.Eng); Fellow of the Institute of Physics (FInstP); a Fellow of the Institute of Engineering and Technology (FIET); and is licensed as Professional Engineer (P.Eng) in Ontario. He is also a member of the Institution of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (MIEEE) and a member of the Optical Society of America. He is an Emeritus Professor of King’s College London. His current research emphasis is sustainable solutions for broadband access for all.

3. Dr. Sawsan Abdul-Majid’s Background and Role

 Sawsan Abdul-Majid , received M.Sc and PhD degrees in Electrical Engineering from Varna University, Bulgaria, in 1984 and 1992 respectively. In 1993, she joined the Faculty of Engineering at 7th of April University in Libya. In 1999-2003 she worked as optical Engineer at Global fiber optics / Mississauga and Optiwave Corporation/Ottawa. In 2003-2008 she held faculty positions at the University of Technology and Koya University in Iraq, where managed an International project to establish Women Information Communication Technology (WICT) centers at Iraqi Universities. Since 2008, she has been working as a Research Associate/ group manager at the Center for Research in Photonics at the University of Ottawa. Her work expertise is in the field of Silicon photonics, and nano photonics. She has more than 42 publications, related to optical amplifiers, optical systems and silicon photonics. Dr. Abdul-Majid is a member of IEEE Canada, region 7 since 2003. She is also IEEE Canada Humanitarian Initiatives Committee Student Activities Committee Chair since 2010.

4. Dr. Hall’s CCECE Key Note Presentation (May 6th, 1:20-2:20 at U Regina)

Le Campus Digital: The economic importance of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) infrastructure is widely recognised. Since 2008, over 50% of the world’s population live in cities and this proportion is expected to rise to 80% by 2020 to reach 6.4 billion by 2050. In Canada, 85% of Ontarians already live in urban areas. Cities are the dynamo of the economy and the fountain of innovation. Just as cities have been transformed by the introduction of previous utility and transport networks, urban planners envisage “Digital Cities” which are predicated on ubiquitous wireless access and ‘cloud’ computing to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of all operations. The presentation will consider strategies available to cap growth in ICT network energy consumption whilst accommodating growth in the number of subscribers and the bandwidth of services. The talk will be illustrated by examples drawn from research into radio-over-fibre access in the e-City and photovoltaics research at the University of Ottawa.

5. IEEE HIC student competition winners

First prize winner, is   Marielle Magtibay , undergraduate student at the Department of Chemical Engineering, University of Waterloo. Paper title:  DESIGN OF A HYBRID RENEWABLE ENERGY SYSTEM  FOR A NORTHERN ONTARIO COMMUNITY Ms. Magtibay will be sponsored by IEEE- HIC to attend GHTC 203 in Silicon Valley.
